OpenHW Group CORE-V RISC-V open-source cores with CEO Florian 'Flo' Wohlrab at Computex 2024 Update
Florian "Flo" Wohlrab, CEO of OpenHW Group, leads a Canadian-based nonprofit that operates globally, focusing on open-source hardware. The organization specializes in creating industrial-grade, fully open-source RISC-V cores that are thoroughly verified and documented, all available under the Apache 2.0 license. This setup allows users to download the necessary files, including verification suites, from their GitHub repository to design their own chips and products. OpenHW Group invites users to become members and collaborate with other industry players like Silicon Labs, Talis, and Axella, to further develop and verify RISC-V IP for industrial-grade integrated circuits (ICs).
In the RISC-V ecosystem, OpenHW Group occupies a unique position. While RISC-V International provides the specifications, numerous vendors offer RISC-V solutions. At Computex 2024 in Taiwan, vendors like Andes Technology showcase their commercial RISC-V offerings. Similarly, in the US and Europe, companies like SciFive and Codasip are prominent. OpenHW Group distinguishes itself as one of the few fully open-source, commercially viable providers. Their RISC-V IP is designed to be used in ICs that can be produced in large quantities, exemplified by their CV40 core, which has been shipped over 500 million times. This core is similar in performance to an ARM M4 and is part of their open-source offerings.
One of OpenHW Group's notable achievements is the wide adoption of their cores, particularly the CV40, which has reached 500 million shipments, although the actual number might be higher due to the open-source nature of the project where users are not required to report their usage. The CV40's performance is comparable to an ARM M4, and it is often used in products without royalties. The organization hopes users find the cores beneficial enough to join their community, which offers networking opportunities and collaboration with other members.
OpenHW Group offers several core families, including the deeply embedded CV2, the CV4 comparable to ARM M4, and the CVA6 suitable for set-top boxes, similar to ARM A53/A55 cores. They provide comprehensive verification tools and documentation to ensure bug-free implementations. Partners like OSM in the UK and Beijing Institute of Open Source in China contribute to compiler development, including LLVM and GCC. Companies like Amazon and Red Hat also participate, enhancing freeRTOS and Linux compatibility for these cores.
The group is preparing for future technologies, ensuring that new chips are ready when needed. This includes working with partners like Red Hat to develop Linux-capable systems on FPGA instances in Amazon data centers. This collaboration allows high-performance applications to be ported to RISC-V, demonstrating the group's forward-thinking approach and strong industry support.
RISC-V technology is increasingly integrated into various devices, including smartphones. Wohlrab illustrates that RISC-V cores are already used in touch controllers, Wi-Fi modules, and storage controllers within smartphones, though the main processors are yet to adopt RISC-V widely. Companies like Qualcomm and Google are working towards integrating Android with RISC-V, indicating a future where fully RISC-V powered phones could become a reality.
Although specific manufacturers and their usage of RISC-V are not always clear, Wohlrab notes that many Chinese manufacturers, such as Oppo, incorporate RISC-V in their devices through components like touch controllers and Wi-Fi chips. This widespread but often unnoticed adoption shows the versatile application of RISC-V in modern technology.
For software, OpenHW Group supports a variety of operating systems running on RISC-V microcontrollers, from bare metal to real-time operating systems (RTOS) like Amazon's FreeRTOS. They also work with Zephyr and ThreadX, and for higher performance applications, Linux distributions such as Fedora and Ubuntu are being developed. The group's efforts ensure a broad software ecosystem, supporting both low-end and high-end applications in the RISC-V space.

    I like where we are going with ARM-based CPU on Windows, but opening up the laptop and you have to admire Apple for how aesthetically pleasing the innards of their machines look. Not withstanding the soldering RAM to the CPU chiplet, but anyway. Room to improve on the next ARM-PCs. Hopefully when the Snapdragon exclusivity runs out and AMD + Nvidia can finally enter and design competing solutions on ARM.

    I wish for Chrome OS with Kompanio 838 to get a few Linux apps to be fully supported: - Davinci Resolve with full real-time 4K60 encoding/decoding and smooth usage! Maybe few other video editing apps to be supported too if possible. - Adobe Suite and a perfect GIMP performance - Music creation DAW apps - OBS and other live streaming - 3D/architecture and other software be supported for a pro user base - Somehow support thousands of games, even AAA titles and run them smoothly on the GPU! Maybe to include some x86 translation layer but to encourage more and more games be recompiled and run smoothly on Arm! I wish Google partner with Nintendo (and with other game creators) to port all their back-catalog of hundreds even thousands of games included with a Netflix-style subscription for unlimited gaming for Chromebooks, Android phones and Google TV! - Easily and officially support any other flavours of Linux if the user would rather run a "full Linux" on their Chromebook. Full Chrome browser, Android and Linux apps support must be available easily in any other Linux on the device! If they can do all that work with @LinaroOrg and others to port these top-20+ most important productivity apps to Chrome OS on Arm, then bring Kompanio 838 Laptops to the market from around $299, $399 that feel as good as any $999-2000 Macbook, then things start getting all that more interesting to have Chromebooks be full Macbook/Windows alternatives even for higher requirement productivity!

    USD$10,000 for a dev kit seems a bit odd to me. For something that looks like 20 airjet mini and the rest their proprietary testing tools, I would want to try on a much wider array than just their testing tools they set up as well as seeing at what point they fail on my own testing not the company that makes them.

    Qualcomm's Microsoft exclusive agreement, was for Windows excpusivity not anything else. Microsoft was just locked to use Qualcomm ij laptops shipping with Windows.

    • @charbax
      @charbax 2 дні тому

      I think the exclusive agreement had all kinds of directions, that only Qualcomm would be used by Microsoft, that Qualcomm would only ship Windows on all their laptop devices, and I guess that the agreement also had something in there about minimum pricing so that Microsoft could get a significant enough license fee per device and so that Qualcomm also could charge enough per processor that they sold. The problem with this kind of agreement is that it kept the sales very low, it did not Kickstart enough of a revolution in the laptop market as it should have, they weren't enough apps, they didn't even have Chrome, they had no video editing app, no Adobe suite, no music making apps, no nothing, meanwhile with the price was too high. I hope both Qualcomm and Microsoft have learned from their mistakes of the previous years and that they will not do the same again, this time Linux need to be fully supported on every single device, this time they need to encourage lower prices in a full range of different prices among the manufacturers, this time they cannot make this an exclusive with Qualcomm they also need two invite other chipmakers to support this platform, they need to have some Wi-Fi only and other with 5G, they need to fully support dual booting Linux + Windows, they need to also support triple boot with a Chrome OS if people might want that, some of these designs need to also be shipping with Chrome OS as the default but always make it easy to install a flavor of Linux that they use it might want to use.

    I'm currently using a thermoelectric cooler neck band to cool myself off this summer, but it uses noisy and ineffective mini fans to cool the TEC chips. AirJet Minis would be much more effective, not to mention being able to ditch the heatsink and lower the thickness of the device considerably. I'd normally buy a Developer Kit from them, but they're asking $10K. For that amount of money, I could just cannibalize a bunch of Zotac PI430AJ and still have a lot of cash left over for other hardware dev tools.

    Yeah the best cpu blablabla... Lenovo and HP already putting heavy disclaimers on their pre-orders that the claimed tests/benchmarks numbers don't reflect reality and might be high inflated numbers from lab test conditions... Linus Tech Tips had to sign a non-disclosure agreement for just holding a test unit, he wasn't allowed to ask a lot of questions and certainly wasn't allowed to run any kind of benchmark or battery test. All units had to be plugged in all time to their power supply and if disconnected it was only allowed for a few minutes to prevent any estimates about battery leaking out. Till it comes out and actually get tested by independent reviewers, these claims are worth crap !

I need to stay further back the wireless microphone captures everything from far away! It's probably an automatism I have from my many years filming with a shotgun microphone so then I needed to stay closer to people to capture good audio.

      @@derJackistweg I didn't buy cameras with perfect sensor or gimbal stabilization to have them be put on a tripod.. Eventually, if DJI makes a camera that is suitable for tripod that automatically frames people using AI and automatically zooms in, including to zoom in on objects being talked about, while keeping 4K60 quality, and automatically merges from 2+ angles, then sure then I might consider it. Now it's just not suitable to keep one perspective during the whole interview. Thank you for all these videos. Thanks to you, I can virtually visit the fairs I've always wanted to attend but never had the chance to, and see what everyone has done step by step. What you do is truly a "service," and I believe it is very valuable.
